Carmel Sidewalks

Putnam County, NY

HVEA designed this project to construct sidewalks along New York State Route 6 in the Town of Carmel. The project required a NYS Highway work permit. It provides pedestrian access through this commercial corridor and connects to the recently revitalized Main Street (Route 52) and Putnam Bikeway.

This project was funded with federal funds through the Transportation Enhancement Program and Federal Transportation Administration. It was progressed under the oversight review of the Local Projects Group.

This project included:

  • Two miles of new sidewalk
  • Historic property (Reed Memorial Library)
  • Streetscape and retaining walls
  • Roadway drainage
  • New culverts
  • Guiderail and signing

There are three historically significant sites in the project area: 1) the site of the Drew Ladies Seminary, 2) the Gilead Presbyterian Church, and 3) the Reed Memorial Library. The sidewalks near these sites were enhanced with streetscape elements.
