Main Street Accessibility Improvements & Pedestrian Signal Improvements

Beacon, NY

Project Description:

HVEA provided design and construction inspection services for two projects to improve pedestrian safety throughout the City of Beacon.

A historic setting, Main Street consists of one shared through lane with parallel parking on both sides of the street. Balancing the needs and safety of all users can be challenging in downtown environments. On-street parking is a priority and can create issues with sight distance and conflicts with bicyclists. This project included the design of curb extensions (“bump-outs”) at key intersections along Main Street from Route 9D to Teller Avenue to ensure vehicles do not park close to cross walks to adversely affect pedestrian sight lines and movements. To also minimize issues with snow removal and snowdrifts, HVEA also recommended the placement of flanker basins to alleviate issues with drainage and stormwater runoff.

In addition, HVEA provided the design to improve nine separate intersections within the City of Beacon through the installation of pedestrian countdown timers and push buttons. The signal equipment was evaluated and upgraded to synchronize with the pedestrian accommodations. Further enhancements included ADA/PROWAG compliant high-visibility crosswalks, mid-block crossings and streetscape improvements.

These projects were funded with federal funds through the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) and progressed under the oversight review of the NYSDOT Local Projects Group.

  • ADA curb ramps
  • Bump-outs
