Creek Road at Smith Street

Poughkeepsie, NY

HVEA redesigned the intersection of Creek Road, Smith Street, and Little George Street in the City of Poughkeepsie. The former intersection was an unconventional, poorly aligned junction of three City streets with no pedestrian accommodations. Inefficient movement of traffic through the intersection caused significant queues and backups that exceeded seven minutes at peak periods. Many of the students and staff at Dutchess Community College utilized Creek Road, which added to the traffic volume issues.

This project reconfigured the intersection to a modern roundabout, which have reduced the traffic backups significantly. To further increase pedestrian safety, sidewalks were also installed to provide a pedestrian connection between a large urban housing complex and a trail head of the Dutchess County Rail Trail at Morgan Lake.

HVEA also provided construction inspection services for this project.
