Lake Drive Bridge Replacement over Quassaick Creek

Newburgh, NY

HVEA provided design and construction inspection services for the replacement of a twin metal arch culvert bridge over the Quassaick Creek with a single span bridge. Originally built in the 1970’s, the structurally deficient bridge had an inefficient hydraulic opening which contributed to the flooding issues experienced in this area. In addition, scour protection was also key as the creek flow can often increase rapidly during storm events.

HVEA designed a 40’ 3-sided precast bridge structure to replace the 2 failing pipes. A larger hydraulic opening was also designed.

The Lake Drive Bridge leads to the main entrance of the Lake Street Apartments. A key component of the design was to maintain permanent pedestrian accommodations and sidewalks to the Lake Street Apartments. All sidewalks were designed to be ADA/PROWAG compliant.

This project was funded with federal funds and was progressed under the oversight review of the NYSDOT Region 8 Local Projects Group.

This project included:

  • Replacement of the existing twin metal arch culvert bridge
  • Hydraulic analysis utilizing HEC-RAS
  • Scour protection
  • Roadway drainage
